The dashing--- but bored--- soldier of fortune Richard Hannay suddenly finds himself embroiled in a nefarious--- but not unwelcome--- plot by a hostile foreign power to smuggle high-level military plans out of the UK in the politically charged 1930s.
The lovely and mysterious Annabella Schmidt approaches Hannay at a music hall performance, claiming two men in the audience have been hired to kill her; so, naturally, he offers her the sanctuary of his humble London flat.

When she turns up extremely dead the next morning and her assassins are waiting outside to make Hannay their very next victim, he disguises himself as a milk delivery man and flees by train into the Scottish Highlands in search of the sinister spymaster whom he will recognize by the missing pinkie of his left.... or is it his right?.... hand.

As Hannay manages to fall into and out of the clutches of a string of crofters and police detectives, being shot at by ruthless spies, and dive-bombed by enemy aircraft upon the heath, all the while handcuffed to a beautiful, blonde, and highly proper secretary, he manages to stumble ever closer to the secret of The 39 Steps.
