This American classic tells of the Hubbard family in the American South, just after the Civil War. It is a shocking tale of the things done in the quest for money and power. Ben and Oscar, brothers and rivals, must rely on money from their ailing brother-in-law, Horace, to see their dreams of a local cotton gin come true. But their sister Regina, ever shrewder and crueler than her brothers realize, has her own plans for her husband's fortune. The iconic dysfunctional family, each Hubbard attempts to maneuver impressionable spouses and children in his (or her) own favor, only to find that the deepest of desires are also the most destructive.
