A favorite fairy tale for all ages, RAPUNZEL tells the story of a young woodsman and his pregnant wife who dreams of and demands only the rampion (‘lamb’s lettuce’) from the garden of Mother Gothel, the witch. The husband reluctantly retrieves the rampion, is eventually caught, and must give up their new-born child, Rapunzel, to the witch or die. The witch raises Rapunzel in a locked, concealed tower deep in the forest. Price Yarrow stumbles upon the tower. Rapunzel and Yarrow fall in love, but their plans for escape are thwarted by the witch. Yarrow is blinded and set to wander and Rapunzel is abandoned to her fate. After a year, the lovers are reunited. The story is by turns comic and sorrowful, lyric and poetic.
