It is 1953 and Margaret Johnson, wife of an American businessman, is touring the Italian countryside with her daughter, Clara. When Clara’s missing hat is recovered by a handsome Florentine named Fabrizio, sparks and an immediate romance erupt. As Margaret tries desperately to keep the young couple apart, the real truth about her daughter is revealed. Margaret is then forced to reconsider not only Clara’s future, but her own as well. Called “the most intensely romantic score of any musical since West Side Story” by the New York Times, The Light in the Piazza received six Tony Awards in 2005, including Best Original Score.
