The Vampyre is a darkly menacing, suspense-filled thriller which reaches back into the lives of Mary Shelley, her husband and poet, Percy Shelley, and the notorious Lord Byron. While staying on the shores of Lake Geneva, Byron suggested they and others sharing the villa each write a ghost story. John Polidori, Byron's physician, designed the novella, The Vampyre, which was published in 1819. The themes in Polidori's tale influenced Bram Stoker's Dracula and eventually the whole vampire genre. This play is an adaptation of that novella.
Lord Ruthven, a suave, seductive and deadly vampyre with a taste for gambling, gains the confidence of Aubrey, a young man who is dazzled by Ruthven's worldliness. Through Aubrey, Ruthven gains entrance to the English country-side home of Aubrey's aunt, Lady Harwood. As he draws Aubrey ever more deeply into debauchery and debt, others try to loosen his hold on the impressionable youth, but to no avail. Before the evil Ruthven has sated his thirst and claimed a bride, there is murder, terror and excitement. Will this family be able to save themselves and each other before it is too late?
